Vanessa Kelly was a recent presenter at the American Bar Association’s Annual Meeting held in Chicago in August 2009. Vanessa spoke on the timely topic of reductions in force and alternatives to reductions in force. The challenge for companies during these turbulent times is to meet the economic realities yet still retain the strength and versatility to bounce back when the economy improves. Companies who are innovative, transparent with their workforce, and cautious in making sweeping changes will weather the storm better. The challenge to legal counsel is to understand the business needs and drivers of their clients and provide the expertise to navigate the legal issues that abound in managing a reduction.
